In 425 BCE, the Athenian general Cleon won a battle at Pylos, trapping 120 Spartiate “peers” or “elites” on a small, relatively desolate peninsula. The result: a stalemate that paralyzed Sparta and ground the Peloponnesian War to a halt. The story has always resonated with me, and serves as a spiritual inspiration for much of my thought – how seemingly minor setbacks in terms of objective metrics can result in far greater impacts in perception.
